Google's new Dunant subsea cable is all set to deliver 250TB data speed

Finally, after more than two years of work the new subsea cable connecting the US and Europe is online and ready for service with record-breaking 250 terabits per second (Tbps). Google has officially announced this feat of achievement. This subsea cable is capable of sending the entire digitized library of commerce three times every second online. As per the officials, it is named after the Nobel Peace Prize winner and the founder of the Red Cross, Henry Dunant.

“Crossing the Atlantic Ocean between Virginia Beach in the US and Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez on the French Atlantic coast, the system expands Google’s global network to add dedicated capacity, diversity, and resilience, while enabling interconnection to other network infrastructure in the region.”

“We originally announced the Dunant cable is the first long-haul subsea cable to feature a 12 fiber pair space-division multiplexing (SDM) design and will deliver a record-breaking capacity of 250 terabits per second (Tbps) across the ocean. Increased cable capacity is delivered cost-effectively with additional fiber pairs (twelve, rather than six or eight in past generations of subsea cables) and power-optimized repeater designs”, said Chris Ciauri, President, EMEA, Google Cloud.

Google states that this project was possible with the partnership of SubCom, a global partner for undersea data transport. They engineered, manufactured, and installed the Dunant system. The Dunant features a 12 fiber pair space-division multiplexing design. This technology enables more fibers within the cables hence resulting in higher system availability. Plus the revolutionary design allows pump laser optical components sharing on multiple fiber pairs.

Dunant is not the only project Google has their hands on. So far this company has established more than 100 points of presence, thousands of edge node locations, 91 dedicated interconnect locations, and 24 Google Cloud Platform (GCP) regions. Google’s next project ‘Grace Hopper’ running in the US, UK, and Spain is will be ready for service in 2022.
