The US government placed Huawei on its Entity list on 16th May 2019. This action thus prohibited all the US companies from collaborating with Huawei. This resulted in a major problem for Huawei as well as its users. Users could no longer access Google services, YouTube or any day to day apps they used to. One of the major setbacks for Huawei users was the lack of the Google suite of apps. Google has opened up about the question about the integration of Google services with Huawei, asked in their article, “Answering your questions on Huawei devices and Google”. In the article, Google stated that they will be giving security updates and updates to Google’s apps and services on Huawei devices that were available to the users on or before May 16, 2019, only.
Google Warns Huawei Device Users
Furthermore, Google has advised users, not to side-load applications like YouTube, Gmail, Google Chrome or any other services. Side-loading these apps won’t work properly as Google does not allow its services to run on uncertified devices due to security and privacy reasons. If any user side-load the Google services on their devices, there’s a high risk of installing an app that has been altered/ tampered with in ways that comprises the user security.
On this issues, Tristan Ostrowski, Android, and Play Legal director stated,
“To protect user data privacy, security and safeguard the overall experience, the Google Play Store, Google Play Protect and Google’s core apps (including Gmail, YouTube, Maps and others) are only available on Play Protect certified devices.
Play Protect certified devices go through a rigorous security review and compatibility testing process, performed by Google, to ensure user data and app information are kept safe. They also come from the factory with our Google Play Protect software, which provides protection against the device being compromised.”
As per the Huawei officials, they are fully committed to using its in-house Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). They will not be using Google services and others even if the ban is lifted in the future. Huawei Mobile Services includes Huawei Mobile Cloud, Huawei Video, Huawei App Gallery, Huawei Browser and many other useful services.
