Coronavirus affects Mobile World Congress 2020, most of the companies are backing off from the event

Update, Feb 13, 2020: MWC 2020, which was scheduled to run from Feb 24-27, has been canceled over the coronavirus concerns.

Original article, Feb 10, 2020: Mobile World Congress (MWC Barcelona) is one of the most consequential events for scale, content, and influence within the mobile industry. At this event, the technology company across the world showcase their innovative tech products in MWC’s zones and pavilion-Digital Planet, Internet of Things Zone. For the year 2020, this event was scheduled for Feb 24 to Feb 27. With more than 2400 exhibitors and 109,000 professional visitors visiting this exhibition on Barcelona’s Fira Gran Via, this event is expected to be a grand event. But following the disruption that Corona Virus has created, this event is on the verge of facing major setbacks as most of the world-renowned companies are backing off.

The following companies are not attending the Mobile Congress 2020 event:

Amazon

“Due to the outbreak and continued concerns about novel coronavirus, Amazon will withdraw from exhibiting and participating in Mobile World Congress 2020, scheduled for February 24th-27th in Barcelona, Spain,” the company’s spokesperson said in a statement to TechCrunch.

Sony

“As we place the utmost importance on the safety and wellbeing of our customers, partners, media, and employees, we have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from exhibiting and participating at MWC 2020 in Barcelona, Spain,” said Sony in a statement posted on its website.

LG

“This decision will prevent needlessly exposing hundreds of LG employees to international travel, which most health experts have advised,” as per company officials.

Ericsson

“The health and safety of our employees, customers, and other stakeholders are our highest priority,” said Ericsson’s President and CEO Börje Ekholm in a statement. “We were looking forward to showcasing our latest innovations at MWC in Barcelona. It is very unfortunate, but we strongly believe the most responsible business decision is to withdraw our participation from this year’s event”, said the Ericsson officials.

Nvidia

“Ensuring the safety of our colleagues, partners, and customers, we regret not attending the upcoming tech trade show. We have been looking forward to sharing our work in AI, 5G, and vRAN with the industry, but believe this is the right decision,” as per the company.

Intel

An Intel spokesperson stated that “The safety and wellbeing of all our employees and partners is our top priority, and we have withdrawn from this year’s Mobile World Congress out of an abundance of caution.”

Media Tek & Vivo

Media Tek and Vivo are also backing off from this event.

Companies that will be limiting its presence on the event
